The cost of radiotherapy in India can range from ₹50,000 to ₹5,00,000 or more, depending on the factors mentioned above. Basic external beam radiation therapy might cost between ₹50,000 and ₹1,50,000, while advanced treatments like IMRT, IGRT, or CyberKnife can cost upwards of ₹2,00,000 to ₹4,00,000 or more.

The cost of chemotherapy in India can range from ₹10,000 to ₹1,50,000 per cycle, depending on the type of drugs used, number of cycles, route of administration, the hospital, location and other factors. For example, generic chemotherapy drugs may cost less, while targeted therapies or immunotherapies can be much more expensive.

Yes, most health insurance plans in India cover the cost of these cancer treatments as part of cancer treatment. The extent of coverage depends on the specific insurance policy, including factors such as the type of radiotherapy, chemotherapy drugs, admission charges, hospital or clinic network, and any pre-existing conditions. However, the extent of coverage depends on the specifics of your insurance policy, including any co-pays, deductibles, and whether the treatment is received at a network hospital. It’s important to review your insurance policy carefully or consult with your insurance provider to understand what is covered.

Yes, there are several government schemes in India designed to help cover the cost of cancer treatment, including radiotherapy. These include:

  • Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY): Provides financial assistance for cancer treatment, including radiotherapy, to eligible families.
  • Health Minister’s Cancer Patient Fund: Offers financial aid to below-poverty-line (BPL) cancer patients for treatment at regional cancer centers.
  • Chief Minister’s Relief Fund: Some states offer financial assistance for cancer treatment through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
  • Government or Charitable organizations: Many government hospitals & some non-profit charitable trusts offer financial assistance or subsidies for cancer treatment.

To prepare financially for chemotherapy:

  • Review your insurance policy: Understand what is covered and what costs you will need to pay out-of-pocket.
  • Discuss costs upfront: Ask your healthcare provider for a detailed estimate of the total cost of treatment, including any potential additional expenses.
  • Explore financial aid: Research and apply for any government schemes, charitable funds, or other financial assistance programs you may be eligible for.
  • Plan for additional expenses: Budget for travel, nutritional needs, and any other costs that may arise during treatment.

Cancer survivorship refers to the phase of care that follows the completion of cancer treatment. It involves managing long-term side effects, monitoring for recurrence, and addressing the emotional, physical, and social challenges that come with life after cancer. A survivorship care plan typically includes a summary of your cancer treatment, follow-up care instructions, lifestyle recommendations, and resources for emotional and psychological support. Your oncologist will work with you to develop a personalized plan.

Cancer screening involves testing for cancer before any symptoms appear. Early detection of cancer through screening can lead to earlier treatment, which is often more effective and can improve survival rates and even cure permanently. Common screenings include mammograms for breast cancer, Pap smears for cervical cancer, low dose CT for lung cancers and colonoscopies for colorectal cancer. Your oncologist can recommend an appropriate screening schedule based on your risk factors – age, gender, smoking/alcohol habits, family history etc.

While traditional and alternative therapies, such as Ayurveda, homeopathy, and herbal treatments, are popular in India, it’s important to discuss these with your oncologist before starting them. Some alternative therapies may interfere with conventional treatments like chemotherapy or radiation. Your oncologist can guide you on safe and complementary practices that won’t compromise your treatment’s effectiveness.
